What is sustainable travel?

Sustainable travel has two main aspects: travel that protects the environment, and travel that supports local people and communities.

The travel industry as a whole is wasteful and unsustainable, but it doesn’t have to be. Traveling in an eco-conscious and eco-friendly way can take many forms. Choosing to take public buses or trains instead of short haul flights, carbon offsetting unavoidable long haul flights, researching the ethics of any animal tourism before partaking, and carrying a reusable water bottle are all examples of easy ways we can lessen our impact on the environment in our travels.

As important as it is to protect the planet in our travels, it is equally as important to respect and support local communities. Tourism is a massive source of income for many countries, but all too often the money tourism brings in goes directly to big (and often foreign) companies, rather than to the locals themselves. This, coupled with the rising cost of living mass tourism can inflict on a location plus the effects of globalization often means that tourism causes more harm than good for the locals and communities we visit.

Why is sustainable travel important?

Travel is a life changing experience full of wild adventures, exciting stories, and immense personal growth. This shouldn’t come at the expense of the health of the planet and the well being of the communities we visit. Travel can be just as beneficial for local communities and the planet as it is for the traveler. With a desire to grow and a little education, we can all take the steps necessary to make travel reciprocally beneficial for travelers and locals alike, while also taking better care of this planet that gives us life. It’s essential to keep our planet and our communities healthy, because without them, what’s really the point of traveling?
